Come 15 November, corks will begin popping on the mandatory date for opening and drinking this year's vintage of Beaujolais Nouveau. And to make sure that the young wine can be decanted simultaneously by wine enthusiasts across the globe, Lufthansa Cargo is all set to begin transporting more than 1,000 tonnes of the young French red to destinations around the world – all in all, well over a million bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau.
To guarantee that wine dealers, worldwide, have the fresh wine in stock all at the same time on the third Thursday in November, only experienced logistics specialists, like Lufthansa Cargo, are entrusted with worldwide distribution. From Lyon, the wine metropolis in the Beaujolais region, the cargo carrier is airfreighting Beaujolais Nouveau between 8 and 11 November, principally to the USA, Japan and Korea.
To handle the shipments, Lufthansa Cargo has stepped up its staffing level in Lyon with employees from its stations in Paris and Frankfurt, who will be helping to ready the liquid cargo for transportation to eager wine bibbers. Once the wine is securely stacked on pallets, it will be trucked by a fleet of 63 trucks to the airports in Frankfurt, Brussel, Munich und Leipzig prior to being loaded onto freighters or into the belly holds of Lufthansa passenger aircraft for the flight to the new wine's final destinations. Lufthansa Cargo is transporting around 1,070 tonnes of this wine, its Lufthansa Cargo Charter Agency subsidiary is flying a further 186 tonnes on two charter flights.
